With its deep violet color, this rare Mountain Violet heirloom rice is the most highly prized sticky rice grown in the remote terraces of northern Luzon, Philippines. It is a medium-grained purple rice which keeps its vibrant violet color after cooking and is plump and sticky. Traditionally used in sweet snacks and desserts, this rice can also be used in soups, salads or to add color and texture to almost any dish.
Revered throughout the region for its cultural and culinary importance, Mountain Violet rice is cooperatively grown by family farmers in the municipalities of Natonin, Barlig, Tadian, Sadanga, Sagada, Sabangan, Bontoc and Besao Mountain province.
*Please note for shipping: Eighth Wonder heirloom rice and Social Products Cotabato rice are shipped separately from two different warehouse locations.
This heirloom rice comes from our friends at Eighth Wonder Inc., a social enterprise that imports select varieties of heirloom rice from the famed mountain terraces of the Philippines. Eighth Wonder operates in more than 18 indigenous communities, directly supporting sustainable agriculture and socio-economic development. They are furthering the model of fair trade to include farmers as full economic partners in this international business.
