How To Cook Black Rice

During our demo samplings with our Social Products Mindanao black rice, we often get questions from new customers on how to cook black rice. We have step by step instructions on our box, and we suggest cooking it like one would cook brown rice since they both have that outer bran layer versus polished white rice that absorbs more water and takes a little longer to cook. Below are the steps we take to cook black rice, whether via rice cooker or stove top.
*Optional: Prior to cooking, we often soak our rice for 30 minutes, which helps the rice grains separate, cook lighter and fluffier, and even cook a few minutes faster.

RICE COOKER:

1. Rinse and clean rice with water
2. Mix 1 cup of black rice with 2 cups of water (*optional filtered water)
3. *Optional: add 1 inch of fresh cut lemongrass or pandan leaves to accent and complement the natural heirloom black rice flavor
4. Cook in rice cooker until al dente (firm to the bite) approx 45 min to 1 hr. The more cups of rice you use the longer it will take to cook.
5. Stir occasionally when water has evaporated to cook evenly
6. Let rice sit and breathe for 10 minutes when finished cooking
7. Serve and Enjoy!

STOVE TOP:

1. Rinse and clean rice with water
2. Mix 1 cup black rice with 2 cups of water (*optional filtered water)
3. *Optional: add 1 inch of fresh cut lemongrass or pandan leaves to accent and complement the natural heirloom black rice flavor
4. Add everything to pot, cook on high for 4 to 5 minutes until water is boiling, and cover
5. When water starts to boil, lower the heat to low and let simmer for 30 to 35 minutes until al dente (firm to the bite) and cover
7. Stir occasionallywhen water has evaporated to cook evenly
8. Offset the cover over the pot slightly and let the rice sit and breathe for 10 minutes when finished  cooking
9. Serve and Enjoy!
